Sure, there are many of those who call themselves leaders today (maybe more than ever) but so few of them are true to the function of that title. They are ego-driven, selfish, and greedy in their attempt to control others for their own personal gain. True leaders are those who are selflessly committed to creating lasting change in themselves for the benefit of others. They inspire the greatness within other human beings and help them do and be more than they ever thought possible.

The mark of a true leader is their ability to create change that lasts. Think about the lasting effects of leaders like Gandhi, Maria Montessori, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Lao Tzu, Mother Teresa, and Jesus. These leaders have legacies that have endured the test of time because they were able to create lasting changes in the landscape of humanity that helped everyone get better, and that’s the kind of leadership we need so desperately today.

5 Leadership Lessons From My Visit To Dr. Martin Luther King’s House – Part 1 of 2

While road-tripping down I-65 to our family’s vacation destination in Destin, Florida a couple weekends ago, we decided to stop for a look at the former home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama. Little did I know that it was going to be such an inspiring look into the life of a leader that has always been one of my personal heroes.

We found the city of Montgomery to be a very quiet place on a Saturday afternoon and were able to locate the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church parsonage where Martin Luther King used to live fairly easily. Tucked away on a neighborhood street, surrounded by houses of like shape and size, was the humble house once inhabited by one of the most influential men in recent history.

What struck me first was the realization that this was really where it all started and shifted. This seemingly insignificant-to-the-naked-eye home was where the seeds of revolution were planted and grew. What an awesome feeling to stand where he stood, walk where he walked, and look upon some of the same scenery that he would have looked upon. It was truly exciting!

While on the tour I gained these 5 tidbits of wisdom from the life of this great leader that, hopefully, will inspire you to greater heights in your leadership as well:

The Leader You Don’t Want To Be: The Power Broker

Well, if you’ve been following along these past couple of days, it’s been an interesting ride as we’ve explored some of the most common models of bad leadership. To review, we’ve already discussed the poser leader and the prostitute leader. If you haven’t had a chance to read those yet, please take a look.

Today, we’re going to conclude this series on leaders you don’t want to be with a look into one of the most pervasive models of bad leadership – the power broker.

The Power Broker

Power brokers are probably the most common form of bad leadership for one simple reason – people in all eras of history have confused “leadership” with “power over others.” Power brokers are found just about anywhere and in any situation. Why? Because the major motivators of power brokers are fear and selfishness – probably the most common issues of the self that humans have to conquer in order to make themselves great – and many don’t.

The definition of a power broker according to the dictionary is a person who deliberately affects the distribution of political or economic power by exerting influence or by intrigue. Interesting…right? Power brokers now begin to take shape in our minds as anyone who wants things to go their way and will do just about anything to bend the situation in their direction.
